(based on materials from the archive of geologist I. P. Tolmachev)
In the archive collection of the internationally recognized scientist, geologist, geographer and paleontologist Innokenty Pavlovich Tolmachev (1872–1950), the leader of the Chukotka expedition of 1909–1910, a description of a trip to the Chukotka Peninsula in 1904 by the German journalist Oscar Iden-Zeller, who traveled tens of kilometers with the Chukchi as a reindeer herder, was found. It was part of his circumnavigation of the world, which became the main topic of his subsequent publications. Due to this, he probably later became considered the first German ethnologist (der Ethnologe) who became interested in Siberia. The second trip to Siberia, where Iden-Zeller arrived in 1913, already in the status of an ethnologist, together with his wife, it turned out to be longer due to the outbreak of the First World War and took 11 years. Documents from I. P. Tolmachev's archive allow us to reveal new aspects of Iden-Zeller's activities in Siberia.
